Light Lighting

Audiovisual matters in the spotlight

As you present yourself you are seen. To be seen, you need light. An optimal event equipment transforms just every place into a fascinating world of light. To get an enthusiastic public, you have to impress it ban it seduce it.
Whatever the event: product presentation, brand display, shows or other mayor events it's the sensual impressions, the atmosphere, which is providing a lasting impression. A successful event presents certainly more than just a well performing technical installation.

Visual effects generate emotions Light imagines Light fascinates.

LED or OLED where does the path lead us?

It all started with a candle or petrol-light in front of a tin reflector. Then came carbon arc lamps, the incandescent lamp (Edison's principle), the fluorescent tube, laser based lights and recent improvements of the light bulb principle. Now we can expect even more advanced technologies, which will change the the very concepts of lighting and display techniques fundamentally.

LED light emitting diodes

… are finding their path into practical lighting technique. As reading lamps, room lights, stop lights for cars, even automobile headlights (as for the Audi A8), but also for signalisation purposes, signalling, announcement and display technique, even for street lighting, LED based lamps are being already employed. For sure we will soon see the first LED based spotlights make their appearance on theatre stages!

The general feasibility has already been established. But the development of a LED combining high luminosity, emitting white light for the whole life cycle (50'000 hours) at low cost remains a major challenge for the engineers!

The best available ED at this day delivers a luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W. Within the coming two of three years, this shall rise to 150 lm/W. This is surely a very good value, as the common light bulbs only deliver around 15lm/W!

But: LEDs will enable radically new concepts of lighting in the future. LEDs are the ideal technology to realise surface-emitting light or soft light devices. But for this purpose, OLEDs are even better!

OLED organic light emitting diodes

… are for now only used for mobile phone displays or miniature TV sets.

The OLED consortium is about to develop a brand new kind of OLED signage displays. Those will even be at wish fully transparent or completely opaque.

For now, OLED has not been used for lighting purposes. But this is about to change, as the consortium composed by Osram, Philips and various other European companies started a program named OLED100: The purpose is to develop modules permitting a luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W and a life cycle of 100'000 hours. Those modules are intended to be generously sized 100 by 100 cm and shall cost less than 100 Euro per square cm. The goal is to reach those objectives within three years.

On the basis of OLED technology, completely new lighting concepts may be realised, such as large and laminar illuminations. Compared to punctual light sources, laminar lights are perceived by most people to be much more pleasant.

But there is an other aspect which makes OLED based light sources so attractive • the extremely low energy consumption. Experts estimate, that the use of OLED technology may lower the energy consumption in the lighting sector by up to 75 percent. Just to illustrate those figures: about 8 percent of the total energy consumption of the United States, representing 58 Billion Dollars per year, are uses for artificial lighting.

Naturally, LED based solutions may also be used for surface-emitting lighting solutions • but those are more expensive. The OLED technology offers the additional advantage to permit the use of flexible substrates, allowing a future a role-by-role production.

In spite of all those difficulties Konica-Minolta is surprising the public with an ambitious goal
It has been announced that Konica-Minolta has the intention to produce OLED based lighting solutions. The company intents to manufacture products with a luminosity of 1000 cd/m2 and a luminous efficiency of 64 lm/W. The life cycle shall amount to 100'000 hours.

In only 3 years, Konica-Minola intends to reach a total turnover of about 174 Million US-dollars with OLED lighting products.

Let us be surprised how we will be able to use those new light sources and which solutions the industry will be able to offer us.
