Displays and television

Conventional televisions will be more and more replaced by flat panel display based on liquid crystal screens or plasma displays. 2006 was the first year in Germany, where more flat picture displays have been sold than normal televisions.

In January 2008 at the CES (Consumer-Electronics-Show) in Las Vegas, Panasonic presented a plasma panel with a picutre diagonal of 3.8m.

The technology of displays and television types

There is no technical difference in regard to the picture representing technology. The television has an additional internal oder external tv-receiver. He converts the analog or digital image and sends it to the display.

A display requires a tv-receiver in order to present the tv-picture.

Actual representing technology for displays/televisions:

  • cathode ray tube screen (tube equipment)
  • liquid crystal screen (LCD monitor)
  • plasma panel
  • rear projection terminal (DLP projectors)
  • OLED television

Future techniques:

  • field emission display (FED)

Screen size

The optimal screen size depends from the intended purpose, the viewing distance and the picture resolution.

  • At 10 to 12 text lines or the regular television resolution with 625/50 character rows the calculated viewing distance is 5×screen hight (3×picture diagonal).
  • With the new HDTV-format with 1080 lines, the calculated viewing distance (VPmax) is screen hight (1.5×picture diagonal).
