What are the important point to consider while selecting displays for professional use in a digital signage environment.

  1. The aera of deployment and environment
    Where and under which conditions will the device operate? What are the environemental factors it may suffer from? A display mounted in a railway station must be suited to withstand dust and extreme termperatures without distrubances;
  2. The input ports
    Commercially used displays need some more and sometimes different input ports as the TV set at home. Digital PC-ports, VGA-connectors, a RS-232 port for bidirectional communication and  …
  3. The Hardware
    Displays for commercial usage must be build upon high-quality components. Only this ensures a long live-cycle without failures. Consider that those displays are often operation 24 hours a day during 7 days per week. A possibiltiy to power them up and down remotely may be a useful option.
    • Displays for commercial usage should be usagle in portrait and landscape format.
    • Those displays should be protected against “burn-in” and posess addtional cooling features.
  4. … and some more extras such as
    • a build in timer devices,
    • a special, protective coating to reduce evironemental impact.
    • additional cooling systems, etc.
  5. The guarantee
    A guarantee to suit the particular commercial requirements. It should cover a operating time of a least three years in all operating modes.

As you can see from this short list, digital signage is audiovison. On a commercial level, nonetheless.
