There are two major techiques of Video-Streaming:
Fixed-Rate Streaming (Fixed Bitrate)
With fixed-rate sreaming, the user selects the video quality himself. However, by high quality, this can cause the video to slacken off.
Flexible-Rate Streaming (Flexible Bitrate, Smooth Streaming)
With flexible-rate streaming, the video is transmitted accordingly to the CPU utilization and the available Internet bandwidth. This constantly enables an optimal quality, and an optimal usage of the available resources.
The used technologies are for exemple Apple’s QuickTime Streaming Server; Microsoft Windows Media Services (Silverlight) or RealNetworks’ Helix Universal Server.
Video on Demand im HTML5-Browser
Flash und Silverlight proved that it is possible to have a stable and innovative Internet solution. How fast the new HTML5 standards will adapt to that is unclear yet. But it is in any case worth to keep an eye on the video functionalities of HTML5.
